When I consult with small businesses that have any presence online, there always is the question, “How can I get more traffic?”.
Well, first of all it helps to have a semi cool website. I was watching Sunday Morning on CBS, it was their money show. On comes an online retailer, Gilt, relatively new but their niche is selling designer clothing to men and women, just off the runway at a fraction of the cost. Not knock offs but the real thing. In other words you don’t have to go to London, Paris or to a Nieman Marcus store.
You can shop Gilt online. Oh, by the way if you still think the internet is a passing fad. 155 Billion was sold online last year and 75% off all Americans shop online.
So, back to how can I get more traffic. First study the Gilt site . You will notice, before you can get into the store, you have to sign up for a free account, become part of the community. Curiosity is great, isn’t it?
If you ask why, it’s two fold. Now they have a potential customer they can market to which means they don’t have to go willy nilly down the street chasing new customers and they can send you information on latest arrivals, sales and more.
I like them because of the simplicity of their site. They don’t try to sell you right away, they try to make you feel a part of the community.
So here’s my big complaint about businesses who are singing the blues about sales. They either “A” won’t spend the money for marketing or “B” come up with a plan to market to their existing customers or don’t know how.
Welcome to Market My Business, designed for off line businesses who want to get online or online businesses who have not seen any significant results since putting up a web site.
Here’s a cool case study before computers. Radios Shack started by the late Charles Tandy and Lewis Kornfeld in Boston had just one or two stores but they had this idea that what if they got as many names and addresses of customers that came through their doors as possible and sent them a flyer every month would make a difference in their business?
Voila, bingo! Lucky guess? Maybe but, Radio Shack the giant corporation was born. As a manager of a Radio Shack store in the early 70′s, many managers were making 50K a year plus getting great stock deals. They split every six months.
I always thought it was a pain to collect names and addresses but then I found out there was a direct correlation to getting names and address to my profit sharing.
So, here’s a nugget for you. Collect names, addresses and telephone numbers on squeeze pages like the one onGilt
You will find that it’s a lot easier to market to an existing customer base than spending the resources hunting down new customers although some of that needs to be in your mix.
Think of this way. You’ve got repair shop, or restaurant or retail store and the weather just turn cold or hot or rainy. No customers walking through the door but with an auto responder like Aweber you can put together a “Special” email so that if your customer comes into today, they’ll get a discount on an oil change, a free appetizer, or 30% off on new arriving sport wear.
If this makes sense and you would like to find out more, watch for my upcoming announcement about my online webinar which will be free on “How To Market Online” even if you totally don’t get it.
